Reduce your carbon footprint and SAVE this winter
One degree saves millions
- If every home in the UK turned down their thermostat by one degree, collectively we could save £705 million a year on energy bills
- We’d also drastically reduce our carbon footprint, saving as much carbon dioxide as taking more than a million cars off the road.
- This goes for the heat to your radiators, and your hot water. If the water coming out of your taps is always scalding, find out how to turn the temperature of your water heating down. Why waste money over heating?
- 65% of UK households claim to have done this already – let’s make sure we’re all joining in.
Save energy, save money, save our planet
Turning off
- Turning appliances off at the wall socket when not in use and avoiding standby saves on average around £35 a year on energy bills
- And it saves 120kg of carbon dioxide – further reducing your carbon footprint.
Get with the programme!
- Washing clothes on a 30 degree programme uses around a third less electricity over a year than washing at 40 degrees.
- Modern washing powders and machines wash thoroughly and efficiently at 30 degrees. In fact, biological detergents should be used at lower temperatures. They contain an enzyme that breaks down stains, but used at temperatures over 30 degrees it is the enzyme that gets broken down instead of the stains!
- You’ll also cut down costs if you only use your machine with a full load.
- As with other electrical items, remember to turn your washing machine off at the on/off switch if there is one, or at the wall when you’re not using it. Leaving it on standby will waste energy and cost you more.
Save energy, save money, save our planet
Boil what you need
- Putting the kettle on is the first thing many of us do when we get home every day. If everyone boiled only the water they needed every time they used the kettle, we could save enough electricity in a year to power the UK’s streetlights for two months.
- That’s equivalent to the electricity used by around 130,000 households for a year.
- Let’s just revisit that… Being more careful about how much water we boil saves 130,000 households’ worth of energy, or two month’s worth of street lighting for the entire United Kingdom. That’s worth stopping to think about. And acting on.
Wear a jumper
- It might sound obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people complain it’s cold when they simply aren’t wearing enough clothes!
- It’s normal to need to wear a sweater indoors on colder days. Before cranking up the heating, pop on another layer, maybe a pair of cosy socks as well as your slippers. Your heating should be set at a comfortable level, but not so high that you’re walking around in shorts and a t-shirt in mid-winter!
